Municipal Education Service

The Municipal Education Service is the City Council of A Coruña department responsible for running municipal educational obligations and for promoting and managing support planned by the Education department.

Municipal education programmes are first of all for schoolchildren in the municipality, and so are open to all schools regardless of whether they are state or privately owned.  If there are enough places, the programmes are also open to schools in the metropolitan area under the same conditions.  Schools outside the area can also join in if there are places available.

One of the Council 's goals in education is to provide schools with stable programmes, so that they can be included as regular parts of annual school activities.

The Municipal Education therefore organises the same activities from one year to the next, so that schools can plan in the long term.

Another goal is to support teaching and learning. The material requires the active participation of teachers in order to obtain the best results.

Educational programmes

The design and setting up of the municipal education programmes is based on the following principles:

  • Subsidiary: Municipal intervention should be complementary to the school curriculum; to reinforce it, never to replace it or compete with it
  • Complex: Municipal action should be focused on fields that schools cannot organise for themselves, e.g. concert seasons, theatre for children etc.
  • Universal: Municipal action should be open to all schools in the municipality
  • Free: Schools should be able to choose which programmes and activities they wish to take part in
  • Integrating: The Council should see that schools' participation in a specific programme is subject to its being part of the school's annual programme, so that it is integrated in the educational plan for children
  • Stable: Municipal action should be stable over time in order to provide schools with a guarantee of continuity to plan their educational projects
  • Comprehensive: Municipal action should involve teachers in the development of programmed activities both in the development phase and in the preparation of material and resources for use in class

Municipal education programmes are based on ten main themes -  Discovering Coruña, Discovering the theatre, Discovering music, Discovering books, Discovering computers, Discovering studies, Discovering leisure time, Discovering participation, Discovering the World and the Early Bird Programme.
